Today's weather was the most favorable
for the hike we had planned
from Hellnar to Arnarstapi (and back)...
so after breakfast we headed to the
trailhead which was only one minute
from our rental house.
we parked the car and started on our adventure.
As we walked we listened to some of the
soundtrack from this movie...
I mean really now...it was like we were on a movie set!
So much beauty. It was breathtaking.
Once we arrived in Arnarstapi
we stopped for a rest and a quick snack at
a small eatery called Stapinn (can't find a link.)
There is also a seasonal hot dog truck nearby
and a hotel across the street that serves food.
We set out on our hike back which took a bit less time
because we (I) wasn't stopping so much
to take photographs : )
Once we got back to Hellnar
we stopped for a proper bite to eat
at the tiny but charming restaurant named
(don't blink or you might miss this place.)
It's tucked into the side of the cliff and looks
very unassuming from the outside.
No real signage and very understated appearance.
They can fit more people in there
than you would think could fit...
not too tight but cozy.
Adorable mismatched tablecloths
and china at each table...very welcoming place!
I would recommend that you visit.
I had read about an 'off the beaten path" site to visit called
Songhellir which means "Cave of Songs."
It is reached by a dirt/gravel road off the main road...
you head up the mountain towards Snaefellsjokull glacier.
Very secluded and super adventurous feeling!
I had seen a small patch of forest while we were driving
earlier in the week...and I made a mental note
that we should try and stop there if we could find it again!
I was so happy when we passed it again...
trees are a pretty rare site in Iceland.
You can read more about this here.
A distant waterfall...
and a hike up to a hidden gorge called Raudfeldsgja.
It is a little bit of a walk from the
parking area...but so worth it.
Wear shoes that can get a little wet and that have
good traction as you will be entering through
that fissure in the photo above and stepping
on rocks to get further into the gorge.
Very cool place...you should not miss it!
