last week my husband, daughter and i had a few hours to spare while traveling upstate to pick up my new car...so we visited one of our most favorite places in tarrytown, new york...
~ the sunnyside estate of washington irving ~
sunnyside began as a 2 room cottage built in 1690 by a dutch-american named wolfert acker. the property then became owned by the van tassell family who owned it until 1802. later that year the land was deeded to an ancestor of the original owner. and finally it was purchased by irving in 1835 for the sum of $1800! irving then expanded the home; he wrote these words:
"a beautiful spot, capable of being made a little paradise ... I have had an architect up there, and shall build upon the old mansion this summer. My idea is to make a little nookery somewhat in the Dutch style, quaint, but unpretending. It will be of stone."
